Most stores begin as a dream for an owner. Ten Thousand Villages began when a group of fair trade fans rallied their time and energy to bring this unique store to Oak Park.
This gift and home décor store is unique in so many intriguing ways. It’s a non-profit with 95% of the staff being volunteers from the community so you’re likely to see a neighbor unpacking hand-crafted items or ringing up an exotic jewelry purchase. All goods are fair trade, so every purchase helps provide vital, fair income to artisans and their families in one of the 35 developing countries represented in the shop. And you’ll find true treasures for your home of wall hangings, art, toys, textiles and more that are made from materials found in the home countries of our artisans.
Come for a sample of fair trade coffee or chocolate. Try on our beautiful jewelry or find a gift with the help of our knowledgeable volunteer staff. Our volunteers are happy to tell the fascinating stories behind your purchase.
